How the VA calculates combined ratings

The VA applies each rating to your remaining “whole person” — not a simple sum. Example: 20% + 20% = 36% (not 40%), which rounds to 40%. Ratings are sorted highest to lowest. Dependent adders (spouse, children, parents) apply only at 30% or higher. Parent dependency requires financial dependence and a combined rating of 30%+. Defined in 38 CFR § 4.25.
